Vietnam's tea output increased dramatically by more than 200%, making it the world's 6th largest export. According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's tea exports in December, 2023 reached 13,723 tons with a value of more than 23.3 million USD, an increase of 11.3% in volume and an increase of 5.1%. in value compared to the previous month. For the entire year of 2023, Vietnam earned more than 208.2 million USD with 119,794 tons of tea, down 18% in volume and 12% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
The average export price reached 1,738 USD/ton, up 7.3% over the same period. However, this price is only less than 70% of the average world export price of tea.
In 2023, tea exports to main markets such as Pakistan, Taiwan (China) and Russia will all decrease, because the economies of these countries are still facing many difficulties. Pakistan's foreign currency shortage makes many importers unable to buy foreign currency to pay exporters.
Accordingly, for the whole year 2023, Pakistan imported 41,564 tons of tea from Vietnam worth more than 80.3 million USD, down 25% in volume and 22% in value. Export price reached 1,933 USD/ton, up 4.4% over the same period.
Taiwan (China) is the second largest market for Vietnamese tea. In 12 months, our country exported 14,489 tons of tea to this market and earned more than 24.2 million USD, down 24.6% in volume and 32.6% in turnover. Export price reached 1,671 USD/ton, down 10.7%.
Ranked third is the Russian market. This country imported 6,294 tons of tea from Vietnam in 2023, equivalent to more than 10.5 million USD, down more than 36% in both volume and value over the same period. Export price reached 1,680 USD/ton, down 0.5% over the same period.
While exports to major markets recorded a decreasing trend, many markets in the European region saw increased purchasing, including Poland.
Specifically, tea exports to Poland in December 2023 increased dramatically by 206.4% in volume and 150.5% in turnover, this is also the month with the highest output since the beginning of the year. For the whole year of 2023, our country exported 320 tons of tea, earning 613,353 USD from Poland, an increase of 84% in volume and an increase of 52% in value.
According to CBI.EU source, Poland has the highest tea consumption rate per capita in Europe (1kg/person/year). Black tea and green tea are the main types of tea consumed in Poland. In addition to tea consumption, Poland is also the main tea supply market for markets within the EU 27, so there is a need to import tea for consumption and export. Therefore, Poland is a market Very potential market for Vietnamese tea products.
In Vietnam, tea has become a steadily growing industrial crop, bringing high economic efficiency, creating jobs and income for many people.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country currently has 120 thousand hectares of tea growing area. The whole country has 257 industrial-scale tea processing enterprises, with a total designed capacity of 5.2 thousand tons of fresh buds/day, employing 220 thousand workers to produce nearly 200 thousand tons of products per year.
Tea is grown mainly in the Northern Midlands and Mountains with about 70% of the country's tea growing area, followed by the Central Highlands with about 19%, and the North Central and Central Coast regions with an area of about 19%. Tea area accounts for 7% and the Northern Delta region 4%. Some localities with large tea areas include Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Phu Tho, Lam Dong,...
Most of the tea import value in major markets around the world from Vietnam accounts for a low proportion. Therefore, even though market demand is weak, Vietnam's tea industry still has the opportunity to expand its market share.
